Universal Land & McWane Ductile - A Relationship Spanning Generations

By Jason Harrison   03/27/2021  In Our Company

McWane’s role as one of the world's most important suppliers of waterworks and monitoring products is based on fulfilling our responsibilities to our team members, our communities, and our customers. Our foundries produce products that deliver water and that last for generations.

In Seattle, Washington, we have been fortunate over the years to be able to partner with a company that we believe aligns with our values. Universal Land Construction Company has a generational legacy of its own. It is highly regarded in the marketplace for its work and its character amongst its peers and competitors alike.

Universal Utilities was established in Seattle, WA, in 1962 by Jerry Bold. By the early 1970s, Jerry and Al's younger brothers joined the company, helping to grow the business taking advantage of the tremendous growth in the Puget Sound area.

By 1977, due to skyrocketing development in the Seattle area and with Jerry and Al's assistance, Buck Zahnow, Stu Bold, Charlie Bold, and Steve Legg founded a new company called Land Construction Co. This new company concentrated on private subdivisions and commercial projects while Jerry and Al continued Universal Utilities working primarily in the public works market. In 1985 shortly before Jerry and Al retired, Universal Utilities and Land Construction merged to become Universal Land Construction Co.

Since 1985 Universal Land Construction Co. has focused primarily on private subdivision and commercial work, entering the public works market when local development activity slows.

Today, with the help of one of the most diverse and experienced workforces in the industry, Jim and Steve Bold own and operate the company. They continue to be a leader in the industry and maintain their excellent reputation with their customers and the utility districts they work in. They have been doing so for generations.

“We have likely purchased over a million feet of Ductile iron pipe from McWane since I joined Universal/Land Construction Co. in 1990. We have never had an issue pop up that was not handled professionally and fairly. We have been blessed to have only two salespeople during my career, both of whom I have personal relationships. A real testament to our longstanding relationship with McWane and our similar values,” said Jim Bold, President, Universal Land Construction Company.

Over the last six decades, and thousands of tons and trucks later, we are honored to be a part of Universal Land’s history and a source for their Ductile iron needs.

At McWane pledge, we continue to improve team member safety, keep our communities clean, and produce high-quality products for the cities and towns that use them. Our foundries produce products that deliver water and that last for generations.
