  • Crossing the Shawsheen River - A Customer Spotlight

Crossing the Shawsheen River - A Customer Spotlight

By Jeff Houser   05/04/2023  In Products

The Town of Andover, located in the northeastern corridor of Massachusetts, provides water service to over 10,000 customers in a network of approximately 257 miles of water mains, the oldest dating back to 1886. This #IronStrong blog tells how the Andover Water Division solved a significant water loss issue due to a breach in one of their important mains feeding a commercial/industrial area.

  • Horizontal Directional Drilling With Ductile Iron Pipe

Horizontal Directional Drilling With Ductile Iron Pipe

By John Simpson P.E., ENV SP, AMPP CT   01/27/2020  In Installation Technical

Have you ever heard the saying, “To the man who only has a hammer in the tool kit, every problem looks like a nail? (Abraham Maslow)” In the water utility industry, some folks may feel this way when faced with a pipeline installation that must circumvent natural or humanmade obstacles, especially water crossings. So, if going around or above is not an option, then what? How about below?

In today’s modern world, there are more tools available in the water pipeline construction toolkit such as the Open Trench Method, the Pier Supported System, and Horizontal Directional Drilling or HDD. In this blog, we’ll discuss the benefits of using Ductile iron pipe (DI pipe) for HDD and provide some considerations and tips for your pipeline installation.

  • Why Use Ductile Iron Pipe? An Interview With Bill Dunnill, GM, Consolidated Utility District

Why Use Ductile Iron Pipe? An Interview With Bill Dunnill, GM, Consolidated Utility District

By Roy Mundy, P.E., ENV SP, Assoc. DBIA   05/03/2019  In Products Technical

Even in this modern era, we are still concerned with many of the issues that early civilizations faced when providing water to our communities, such as supply and demand, pipeline construction and upkeep, cleanliness, conservation and cost. In the fall of 2018, McWane Ductile’s Senior Regional Engineer, Roy Mundy, had the opportunity to interview Consolidated Utility District General Manager Bill Dunnill. The two gentlemen, both with utility management experience, had a candid conversation about Bill’s day-to-day challenges, successes and his preferred choice of pipeline material. The following are excerpts from their discussion.

  • How Much Does Ductile Iron Pipe Cost?

How Much Does Ductile Iron Pipe Cost?

By Stuart Liddell   05/31/2019  In Products Technical

It is pretty much a daily occurrence here at McWane Ductile for our sales staff to receive price requests on a variety of ductile iron pipe (DI pipe) products.  Usually this request is for a specific project, but occasionally design engineers will also ask for “budget pricing” for future underground utility projects. This is typically a pretty simple task, but to provide the most accurate and cost-effective pricing, there are a few items that must be addressed that will ultimately determine the final cost to the customer. This article will review some of those variables that determine the final pricing for your DI pipe needs.

  • Can a Sure Stop 350® Restrained Joint Gasket Be Used for Horizontal Directional Drilling?

Can a Sure Stop 350® Restrained Joint Gasket Be Used for Horizontal Directional Drilling?

By John Simpson P.E., ENV SP, AMPP CT   10/01/2020  In Installation Products Technical

Those involved in the construction of water and wastewater pipelines are probably aware of the installation methodology of Horizontal Directional Drilling (HDD). HDD is a trenchless technique that provides an installation alternative offering several benefits over traditional open-cut. HDD can be implemented with minimal disruption to surface activities, requires less working space, and can be performed more quickly than open-cut methods. HDD can be used to install new pipelines or replace existing ones. Also, it can simplify or eliminate certain permitting processes. Although there are currently no national standards regarding HDD installations of municipal underground infrastructure systems, HDD has seen a dramatic increase in recent years and is becoming more common for any pipe material. HDD may be the fastest-growing trenchless construction method today.

  • Ductile Iron Pipe Weights - An Expanded Explanation

Ductile Iron Pipe Weights - An Expanded Explanation

By Ken Rickvalsky, ENV SP, AMPP CT   04/16/2021  In Products Services Technical

This article takes a deeper dive into concepts outlined in the July 2020 entry prepared by my co-worker Gary Gula, How Much Does Ductile Iron Pipe Weigh and Why Does It Matter to You? Specifically, we will focus on the pipe weight itself, answering questions such as: From where do these weights originate? Why do we show weights on each pipe? How trustworthy are these weights as provided? And, What do these weights mean to me, the pipe customer?
