In the spring of 1993, I was 12 years old when a sudden illness swept through my family. It started with a subtle discomfort in my stomach, but within days, it escalated into a sickness that left us bedridden for over a week. Our entire neighborhood seemed to be ill.
Unknown to us, our proximity to the Howard Water Treatment Facility, one of Milwaukee's primary water treatment plants, was the source of our suffering. The news broke too late, revealing that the water flowing from this facility was contaminated with Cryptosporidium, resulting in an “Estimated 403,000 people falling ill” (The New England Journal of Medicine, 1994). Due to this experience, I know firsthand the importance of ensuring clean water is supplied throughout our nation’s distribution networks.

In my previous experience, I’ve spent many hours operating numerous types of saws in various settings, such as felling a tree during seasonal work in my college years or emergency tree removal work in the aftermath of destructive storms while serving on a right-of-way crew. Whether you’re trimming a tree or cutting a piece of Ductile iron pipe (DI pipe), they share similarities, such as analyzing the situation, safety first, measuring twice, and cutting once.
Over the last few years, the world has been affected by many things, and the ongoing repercussions are still seen today. These effects also impacted the waterworks industry and the handling of pipe stock and pipe yards. During that time, we witnessed delays in the supply chain and extended lead times. Manufacturers and distributors were keen on getting pipe in their yards and holding more quantities and sizes than ever. Pipe and gaskets then began to sit for longer periods. Due to the durable nature of Ductile iron pipe (DI pipe), sitting idle did not affect the product, but the lack of use for pipe gaskets was more apparent.
As we welcome the longer days and nights associated with spring and summer, the outside temperatures across the country will no doubt rise as well. At some point throughout the spring, summer, and even fall months, nearly every town across the U.S. will likely experience unusually warmer and sometimes dangerous conditions. Is every piece of Ductile iron pipe (DI pipe) round? The short answer is no, but most of the time, a piece of pipe may be so slightly oval that it is not even noticeable to the end user. In fact, the way pipe is manufactured today, out-of-round issues are rarely a concern. At our foundries, there are quality assurance procedures in place that help safeguard this from occurring. However, there are occasions when you may encounter a piece of pipe in the field, typically on a field cut, that is too oval to facilitate an easy assembly. Did you know that fewer than 1 in 5 professionals in the water industry are women? 1 In all Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) fields, women only account for 26% of the total representation.2 As a female, I entered the water and wastewater industry with a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Tennessee Tech University. With the data points listed above, it would be safe to assume my college classes were primarily male-filled, and in my current role as a sales representative for McWane Ductile, many offices I visit follow that trend as well. Being a woman of STEM in the water industry, these statistics did not necessarily surprise me. However, in my short time in the business, I've noticed that the women representing water and wastewater are strong role models who continue empowering other women to join and become active industry members. This inspired me to speak to three women who stand out as leaders in waterworks and gather insight into their various roles and experiences in bringing clean water to their communities.
The water industry in the United States has experienced many challenges throughout the years. The good news is that these challenges have been met head-on by experienced, dedicated professionals who continue to provide their customers with clean, safe drinking water even though the bar of excellence continues to rise. One measure depicting the priority of these challenges is the State of the Water Industry Survey, conducted annually by the American Water Works Association. “AWWA’s State of the Water Industry (SOTWI) Survey is designed to identify water sector challenges and investigate possible underlying causes and drivers. In November 2022, when the survey closed, 4,123 water professionals had shared their opinions by responding to the survey—our highest number of responses yet!”(1)
